Progress towards making the net more multi-lingual is welcome says Bill Thompson. It is 40 years to the week since the first data packets were sent over the Arpanet. That was the research network commissioned by the US Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Arpa) to see whether computer-to-computer communications could be made faster, more reliable and more robust by using the novel technique of packet switching instead of the more conventional circuit switched networks of the day.
Worm attack bites at Apple iPhone
The first worm to infect the Apple iPhone has been discovered spreading "in the wild" in Australia. The self-propagating program changes the phone's wallpaper to a picture of 80s singer Rick Astley with the message "ikee is never going to give you up". The worm, known as ikee, only affects "jail-broken" phones, where a user has removed Apple's protection mechanisms to allow the phone to run any software.

A row has broken out over MPs and peers hitting "reply to all" to a round robin e-mail about cyber security. Many MPs hit reply all to the message from Conservative MP Mark Pritchard ensuring a torrent of unwanted e-mails in the inboxes of other MPs. Former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy and others sent messages asking for their colleagues to stop the flow.

End of an era for early websites
